THE POPULAR SPANISH ISLAND OF LANZAROTE

The holiday island of Lanzarote is one of Spain’s best kept secrets. Whilst the island is occasionally still tarred with the inaccurate ‘Lanzagrotty’ brush, the reality is actually very different.

As one of the seven islands that make up the Canarian archipelago, Lanzarote is often a favourite with visitors from mainland Spain. Much of the island’s appeal is down to the more bearable temperatures it enjoys during the summer months, in comparison with Madrid or southern Spain.

But Lanzarote is also popular with this tourist market because it has several unique attractions and its tourist development has been handled in a sensitive way. The attractions are all the work of Cesar Manrique, a renowned Lanzarote artist who earned an international reputation for his projects.

Manrique’s efforts covered a whole range of works, from painting to architecture and landscape design. Thus the attractions he created are often on a large scale and incorporate aspects of the beautiful landscapes Lanzarote has.

British tourists have not been slow to follow in the footsteps of Spanish holidaymakers, as the island has been welcoming foreign visitors for at least forty years. These days however, Lanzarote has become even more accessible.

Thanks to the growing number of low cost operators, flights to Lanzarote are much more reasonably priced than in the past. This, combined with the relatively short flight time of four hours, makes it a great choice of destination, especially in the winter.

In addition, the island also provides excellent value accommodation, as holiday villas in Lanzarote are normally priced well below their European equivalents in Majorca or Portugal. These more affordable tariffs are the result of a much longer holiday season, which allows villa owners to lower the weekly rate they charge.

Even holiday villas in Puerto del Carmen, where some of the most exclusive properties for rent can be found are still within reach of most holidaymakers looking for a sunshine break. Nearly all come with private swimming pools, secluded gardens and all mod cons to ensure that guests feel at home.

This range of good quality accommodation and a huge variety of things to do and see go some of the way to explaining how the island has managed to remain a popular destination, despite ever increasing competition. But it is principally the weather that has marked the island out as a particularly good place to come for a holiday.
